When words fail, jewels speak! Jewellery is more than a symbol, it carries precious emotions. This month we celebrate love with words by our founder’s favourite philosopher and discover in image OnlyJewels newcomers, Isabelle Langlois and Daymard, two talented designers with a particular sense of romance.
Charlotte on Levinas’ Caress:
Perhaps the most beautiful depiction of love I have read about is by Emmanuel Levinas. “The caress does not know what it seeks”. I first read these words when I was 18. They still resonate today.
Levinas talks of the caress as the symbol of truest love. Love appears under many shapes: tenderness, desire, protection… But love does not take, it does not hold. It only dares touch.
In this perspective, a caress transcends all senses. It creates a new intermediary world between the Other and You. A world in which neither are themselves anymore but still are.
Words and thoughts fail to grasp it. Therefore love is blind and “the caress does not know what it seeks”.
This is, to me, a profoundly moving image of love! The one feeling we all live for. I always think that there is something very poetic about a jewel to remind of something that cannot be grasped and keep something that cannot be held.
